The History of Sea Scouting (Roy Massini, The Scout Association)

• Roy joined the Sea Scouts when he was 8. He grew up in Sea Scouting in the 1950s in the River Thames. He has been working hard on a history of Sea Scouting for the past 6 years
• Some Sea Scout leaders feel that their national Scout association is trying to turn them into land scouts. Some would like to see Sea Scouting as a separate organization.
• Warington Baden-Powell was 11 older than Robert Baden-Powell
• “Never say die until you’re dead” – R B-P
• May 1906 – R B-P made a proposal for Scouting to the army
• 1907 – Brownsea Scouting experiment
• March 1908 – “Scouting for Boy” published in fortnightly installments
• 2/3/1847 – Warington was born (note spelling)
• 1857-61 – Studied at St. Paul’s in London
• 1861-64 – Warington joined the H.M.S. Conway as a cadet merchant seaman
• 1871 – W. paddled and sailed a canoe around the canoe
• 1873 – Returned home to London
• 1876 – Became an admiralty lawyer
• “Seamanship and Scouting for Boy”
• 4/24/1921 – Died; gravestone is in Scotland at Saint Andrews

• December 1908 – The term “Sea Scout” was first used
• 1909 – Sea Scout uniform was designed
• October 1910 – Sea Scout section of the Boy Scout Association was formed
• 1960 – Sea Scouting jubilee
• 1910 – R B-P asked for permission from the Admiralty for the development of Sea Scouting
• 1911 – Sea Scouting established in Vancouver, BC Canada
• 1911 – Encouraged involvement in coast watching
• 1912 – Sea Scout founded in the U.S. by Arthur Carey & Charles Longstreath
• 1914 – “Seamanship for Scouts” written by Stuart Garnett
• During WWI 30,000 Sea Scouts were attached to Coast Guard stations, some of whom were actually land scouts
• 1919 – Admiralty recognition scheme was established
• 1921 – Sea Rangers were established
